Happy holidays, everyone! For most people around here, two very special holidays are coming up--Christmas and New Year's Day. In recognition of those two important days, we're holding a double contest this holiday season. So pick up your pencils (or keyboards) and get ready for no less than two holiday-themed contests. Christmas Limerick Contest:It's Christmas (or at least the winter solstice) in Alagaesia, and plenty of ridiculous things are happening with everyone in the Inheritance Cycle. For this contest, write a holiday-themed limerick taking place in the Inheritance Cycle. It can be a limerick about Eragon getting Arya the perfect Christmas present, a pair of limericks describing the Christmas tree Galbatorix puts up in his palace, or even a whole one-shot entirely in limericks about Murtagh and Katrina and an unfortunate incident with some mistletoe. It's all up to you! Just remember- like all poems, this one must be a minimum of 50 words. And don't forget to keep it light-hearted! Limericks are funny, sometimes flat-out silly poems, so don't be afraid to go a little overboard. Rules:- all submissions must be in limerick form
- must be set in the Inheritance Cycle
- must be holiday-related
- like all poetry submissions, it must be 50 or more words. If you don't have enough words, write a second limerick to submit--or write several and create a whole one-shot entirely in limericks!
- if writing multiple limericks, you've got a choice: you can make them relate, or simply write two unconnected holiday limericks
For more information about limericks (including their structure and some examples), here are a few places to look. New Year's Resolution Contest:For a change of pace, the other half of this double contest is a longer, more open short story contest. The rules are lax--all it has to be is a prose story revolving around a New Year's resolution. It can be a one-shot, a two-shot, or a five- or six-chapter story, whatever you like. It's all up to you! Rules:- must be in prose (so no poetry)
- must be an original fiction (not Inheritance fanfiction, and not fanfiction for any other fandom)
- must include a New Year's resolution
All contest entries are due by 11:59 PM (Eastern Standard Time) of December 31, 2009. Why not midnight? Well... that always seems to confuse people, so we'll just make them due a minute early. Be sure to submit them to the "Holiday Double Contest" category! If you have any questions, just post them below and I'll get to them as soon as possible.

Ahahahahha! A limerick contest! AWESOME. I sense an odd-ship limerick (or two or three) in my future. It'll be fun *entering* the contest instead of judging it this time! Ooh, I have a question though. Say I were to write said limerick(s) and post them in my odd-ship poetry collection. Would that still count (so long as I specified in the summary which chapter contained the contest entry)?

@Mindi - sure, so long as you give me a link!
It's a pity I put the "unfortunate incident with mistletoe" in the announcement, because I kind of want to write a limerick about that now...

Hmmm.... I'm getting a hilarious idea for the new year's resolution one... I generally am not good with any sort of poetic devices (except for once every seven years!), but I may give it a shot... I'm liking these contests, mods.

So we can enter both contests? Hmm. Limrics... Dunno. Got a hilarious idea, but I am generally not so good with poetry. Might do the prose contest, if one ought to choose between the two.

Yes, you can enter either contest or both. We probably wouldn't let someone win both, unless they were the only person to enter or something, but you're certainly welcome to enter both!

Wait... the New Year's Resolution Challenge has to be an original fiction? No... I had already started on a Nasuada/Shruikan friendship fic. Excuse me while I go... cry...

Ah I'm sorry... You can still submit that as a normal fic, of course! I'd love to read it anyways Or perhaps turn it into a limerick?

Ha, ha. I really failed at writing this. I didn't even get 100 words into it. Good luck to everyone who has or will submit it.

[Big Official Post Time]
I know there were a few people who wanted to enter this contest, but just weren't ready to submit their stories by the deadline. Because only two stories were submitted within the deadline, I've decided to extend the deadline by one more week, until midnight of January 6, 2010. (seems weird to see "2010", right?)
Hopefully this allows enough time for more entries. If you've already submitted an entry without putting it in the contest category, you may go back and change it to the contest category if you wish. (I did change an entry or two I saw, but don't hesitate to switch your story's category if I missed it.) And if you haven't written a story yet... well, here's your chance!
As always, any questions can be PMed to me or any other moderator, or sent to shurtugalfanfiction (at) gmail (dot) com.
