Thoughts on the SFF Adventure; I have no experience with anything like this, but I love Eragon and I love writing and if I can get the hang of this website then I think I’ll love SFF Adventure.

Character Name; Arkadia Black
Nickname; She’s referred to as Kade by anyone who knows her.
Age; 16
Gender; Female
Role in the Village; Her mother is the town blacksmith. Because she is a female, many villagers don’t come to their forge for business even though her mother is exceptionally talented at her work. Kade has grown up learning pieces of the art from her mother. Usually, though, she can be found running errands for those of the villagers she likes.
Physical Appearance; A lean, slender girl of middle teenage years, Kade is roughly 5’8”. Her lean frame belies her strength, which is hardened by her long days around the forge. She has black hair that is usually unbound and hangs to her mid-back. Her nose is straight, her jaw sharp. Her face is deeply tanned from constant hours outdoors. She has charcoal grey eyes. Her dark coloration sets her and her family apart completely from the other villagers, who tend towards paler skin and softer hair and eye colors.
Initial Weapon; Because her mother knows some of the weaponsmith trade as well of her own blacksmithing trade, she knows her swords well enough to equip Kade with fair, sturdy sword of foreign make. Its hilt is eight inches of hard oak wrapped in faded crimson cloth. The blade itself is slender and the one-sided, the deep silver edge curving outwards into two and a half feet of metal . Kade’s mother told her that the blade was called a katana by the trader she bought it from.
Clothing; Kade rebels against conformity (she takes after her mother in that respect) by constantly wearing dark, loose pants that allow her free movement. She refuses to wear a dress, and the closest thing she’s worn to a skirt is a knee-length tunic... over a pair of pants. She usually sports a short tunic with billowing sleeves that is open around the neck. Because she does so much running outdoors, her preferred shoes are her own bare feet. When working in the forge or during the cold seasons, she wears soft knee-height leather boots that she tucks her pantlegs into. Her only accessory is a small metal locket on a leather thong around her neck. Her mother made it for her in her earlier years, and she’s never parted with it since.
Personality; Arkadia’s temperament is that of the fire that she’s grown up alongside. A clever and rebellious girl, her sharp tongue often gets her into trouble with the villagers. She is openly distrustful of strangers because of what some travellers say to her mother when they hear of her occupation. Still, Kade is a very caring person under her careless facade. She has a soft spot for animals and little children, in part because there are a lot of both running around the forge. The older villagers are distrustful of her, yet the younger children worship her.
Background/History; Kade’s mother apparently has family far up north, but they had a falling out years ago when her mother eloped with her father. Kade’s mother has never clarified what happened to her father. Kade isn’t sure whether he left her mother, her mother left him, or if he died. Kade and her mother came to the village over a decade ago, but in most of the elder villagers’ eyes they are still strangers.

Favorites;
Food; hot bread, goat’s cheese, and cow’s milk are her favorite meal. She loves strawberries as well.
Drink; She loves to share a pint with her mother on occasion, which means that she has developed a relatively impresseve tolerance for alcohol.
Music; Kade loves nothing more than the lone sound of a flute carried over the wind. She is learning how to play from the village storyteller.
Animals; She admires all types of cats and birds of prey. She has two cats of her own wandering around the forge to take care of the rodent problem. Needless to say, she coddles them.

Age Based Off Appearance; Kade appears to be her age, sometimes a bit older because she is so used to taking care of her mother’s brood.
Skin Tone; She has naturally dark olive skin.
Music Preference; She likes anything that triggers emotions in the listeners.
Health; Kade gets a lot of colds and sore throats in the winter, but beyond that she’s perfectly healthy.
Habits; Kade tends to have unusually good hygiene; she can’t stand being dirty, even though she spends most of her free time running around outdoors. She also has an uncommon respect for books and treats them like elderly people. It’s probably because she’s seen so few of them.

Hobbies; Kade’s favorite hobbies are climbing trees (she loves being able to look down on the land from above), playing the flute (she’s terrible, but skill develops with practice), reading (despite her fondness for the outdoors, she is a scholar), and helping her mother in the forge. A few years ago, her mother showed her some basic forms with the katana, and since then has been giving Kade the occasional lesson. Although she has the natural grace and dexterity of a swordfighter and can master forms with relative ease, she has absolutely no experience and can still be considered a raw beginner. Kade loves to attend to her blade by cleaning it and whetting it in the forge. Unfortunately, she rarely has time for this because she is constantly babysitting the younger children.

Family Details; Kade’s mother, Rashana Black, is well known among their town and others for her blacksmithing skills. Unfortunately, her gender frequently precedes her talent and therefore she and Kade survive off of minimal income. Rashana’s people are from the north, but she never talks of them, just as she never talks of Kade’s father. A strong, noble character, she unfortunately has the same temper as Kade and therefore tends to insult possible customers who are doubtful of her gender. This, in part, is why they’re so tight for money. When she and Kade moved out here, Rashana was pregnant with a baby boy. When he was born, she named him Keldar after her uncle. He and Kade are brother and sister. However, when they moved into the village, Rashana picked up twin orphans, a boy and a girl. Their names are Hasha and Raine, respectively. Now, Keldar is eight and Raine and Hasha are eleven. Kade loves them all.
Earliest Memory; The earliest thing Kade remembers is the bright flames of the forge and the sound of her mother’s hammer on a bar of iron.

Interesting character! Unique from the rest of the characters we have here.

Swen (our admin) should have no trouble accepting your character.

Accepted! I like the amount of description you did- it's great to see a well-fleshed-out character like this.

And now I'm going to blatantly rip off skulblaka_fricai's spiel, because it's much better than mine... here's some tips on what to do next, because I know it can be confusing!

  • Start here. All the basic FAQ you'll need to get you started, including what you want to do with your character and how you can get involved in other parts of the Adventure.
  • Next, check out this board. It'll take you to a group of sub-boards titled "Prologue", "Chapter One", "Chapter Two" and "Chapter Two-and-a-Half". Though it's not necessarily *mandatory* that you read these over to participate, it'll help a *lot* in understanding what is going on.
  • Now, you're ready to start Challenges! Challenges are the part of the SFF Adventure that you complete on your own, where you write according to a 'prompt'-like set of instructions that relate to the Story in the SFF Adventure. Be sure to start with Challenge 1; also, any Challenge labeled "Optional" you don't have to complete, though the "Compulsory" challenges *must* be completed continue through SFF Adventure.
  • Once you've finished writing Challenge 1, submit it to http://fanfiction.shurtugal.com/ under the "The Shur'tugal FanFiction Adventure" category. (Character Sheet should be posted as the first chapter, and Challenges are the subsequent ones.)

If you'd like to check out the Roleplaying board, you may as well, but you won't be able to participate until after you write Challenge 1. Good luck! If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to PM me or skulblaka_fricai (or any other moderator!).

Additionally, if you're confused about anything on the SFF Adventure boards, check out this new guide to the SFF Adventure to see what means what and how to get where.  Smiley  Glad to have you around!

(And thanks for blatantly ripping me off, swen... Roll Eyes  I'm just kidding. Wink)

But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore
I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life
To find what it is I've been looking for

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep..."
